CHAPTER R: REGULAR POLYGONS
Briggite Spindeler & Bernd Wollring
Regular polygons are a central subject matter within mathematics. In the classroom, many facts and coherences concerning geometry and arithmetic can be worked out and developed with their aid. In our unit, we create approaches, which already stand open for primary school pupils. We produce polygons by experimentations and supporting constructions and we analyse them. By working with pictures and symbol cards we refer the design of polygons to objects within the real world and backwards. We examine the coherence of picture patterns and number patterns by means of polygons and we characterise regular polygons regarding the symmetry which is typical for them. The learning environments admit a high degree of differentiating between elementary requirements and advanced ones. Consequently, with special adjustment, they can be used in primary school as well as in secondary schools.
