A. The coordinator

Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Education is one of the main providers of teacher education in the Czech Republic. It is also an important centre for research work in mathematical education with a considerable number of successful PhD students. The department offers the only PhD study in Primary and Lower Secondary Mathematics Education for the Czech Republic. The Members of Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Education have experience in teaching in primary and secondary schools together with the provision of in-service courses in many parts of the country. Members have also worked with teachers in other countries notably Slovakia and Poland. Recent research has led to the development of new methods of constructivist teaching. For many years there has been strong international links with a considerable number of countries particularly within Europe. Members of the department were coordinators of a Socrates Comenius project.

B. The partners

1. Universitaet Kassel, Germany
University (EDU.4)

The Universitaet Kassel is a well known university offering a full range of subjects to both undergraduate and post-graduate students. The Faculty of Education is responsible for initial and in-service teacher education across the whole age-range and offers research degrees in several educational disciplines. Members of the Mathematics department in the faculty contribute to the courses and to the supervision of students on research degrees. They have also contributed much by their own research into aspects of Mathematical Education, this research being based on classroom experience. A number of the department regularly give workshops and lectures in other European countries and they have contributed to the knowledge base of Mathematical Education by their writings for books, journals and articles. The department has links with several European institutions thought membership of European projects.

2. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has a well established Department of Education which is responsible for initial and in-service education in the region. One of its strengths is its Department of Early Years Education. The Department has offered in-service courses to teachers for a number of years and members have contributed to courses at National Training Centres, and on Continuing Learning projects and Distance Learning projects. These courses have been based on research done in the department and in other European countries. The Department has undertaken some European Commission funded projects. Members of the department have links with many European institutions through their Erasmus links.

3. School of Education and Social Sciences, University of Derby, United Kingdom
University (EDU.4)

School of Education and Social Sciences, University of Derby has been a provider of teacher education for the region since 1850 and for post-graduate and in-service courses since 1950. A strong Mathematics and Mathematical Education Department has been offering local, regional and international courses for teachers of mathematics for over forty years which have been well received. The members of the department have all had considerable experience teaching in schools prior to joining the university staff. They have been involved in research into pupils learning of mathematics and positive teaching strategies at national and international levels and have worked and given in-service courses in various European countries and the USA. As part of the Faculty of Education the Mathematics department has been involved in several Erasmus programmes and hence have established many links with institutions in Europe. They have been a part of a transnational project within the Socrates Comenius programme. Members of the partner team hold positions of responsibility in international mathematical associations.
