CHAPTER S: 3D GEOMETRY - SOLIDS
Milan Hejný & Darina Jirotková
This chapter deals with 3D geometry. If you look at a four year old boy building towers with cubes and then a fourth grader describing such a building using words or more formal language you will see that there are in fact two different 3D geometries. The first one which is accessible to children in pre-school age is manipulative; the second one is more demandingly ‘theoretical’. The main aim of this unit is to start with manipulative experiences of pupils and to progress step by step into more and more advanced level work. The crucial role in this development is played by the language.
